Amateur Radio is a grand and glorious hobby, but this fact alone may not merit the whole hearted support given to it by nearly all the governments in differentcountries of the world. One aspect is the appreciation of amateurs as a source of skilled radio personnel during calamities. Another aspect is the public service which includes activities of hams during expeditions and emergencies. Amateurs have assisted innumerable voyages and expeditions the several Antarctic explorations. The Antarctic expeditions of our country also have carried out ham radio operators. Indian Hams regularly provide the communication network during the Himalayan Car Rally and other occasions also like Trishna expeditions, National / International Scouts/ Guides Jamborees etc.
Radio is the only way to keep in touch with modern world from remotestplaces. Amateur radio operators provide daily communication and OSCAR (Orbiting Satellite Carrying Amateur radio) satellites ?Talking Computers?relayed position information to expedition team. Amateur Radio has been instrumental in summoning help to areas affected by natural disasters like cyclones and earthquakes.Amateurs rush to the affected areas soon after disaster has struck and set their stations and coordinate the relief operation. Indian amateurs maintained communication between the city of Morvi (in 1979 in Gujrat when Machchu dam burst causing flash floods) and other cities of Rajkot, Baroda, Ahmedabad and Mumbai for three weeks, helping authorities in coordinating the rescue operations, arranging medicines, food and clothing for the flood affected population and conveying messages about health, life and property.
Similar services were rendered by Lucknow hams during Uttarkashi earthquake, Orissa super cyclone, Amarnath pilgrimage tragedy, Gujrat earthquake tragedy etc. The well-wishers and relatives ofAmarnath pilgrims, resident of Orissa & Gujrat residing in Lucknowapproached to HAL Scouts Ham Radio Club to get information about their nearest & dearest residing in affected areas. 3 hams station have been started working in Lucknow at different places by group of hams to provide even a small information of affected area. They were regularly in touch with other hams stations working at different parts of country. Sometimes the Lucknow hams were the only way to give the vital information during these days.
During Orissa super-cyclone tragedy many Oriya people residing in Lucknow approached to club members for getting the news about their relatives / family members living at affected areas. The club was in regular in touch with the relief stations working in different parts of Orissa. During Gujrat earthquake tragedy, many parents of L.U. students who went towards the affected side during their study tours in Gujarat, approached the club members to know about their sons/ daughters. The club members have made contact continuously with the stations set up at various parts like Bhuj, Anjar, Gandhidham, Mumbai etc. to help the relief work and to provide necessary communication back up. They have rendered their services round the clock for a week. But unfortunately, their services were not recognized by general people in these regards. Only the people approached to hams appreciated their dedications for the same
